Jesus is God. Jesus became human. Jesus endured the crucifixion for the joy set before him; the joy He foreknew was the forgiveness of sins, the release from the bondage of the law, the redemption of a once cursed creation, and the glorification of His name, which is the Father’s name, among all in His death and resurrection; the joy He foreknew is the joy available to all who will take up the cross.
There’s a certain irony in the way Michael phrased this idea; it has an intriguing ambiguity. The first way to interpret it is, that Jesus was loving us during His crucifixion and death. The other way is, that Jesus’s love prompted us who believe to go to the cross ourselves. A neat thing that, because both are true.
