The Start of Croquet Weekend

Croquet today. I’m going to take a nap soon, wake up to sing with the St. John’s Chorus before the first match, observe the festivities for a moment, and then be a nerd for the remainder of the weekend.
I have two papers due on the last week of tutorials—one for maths and the other for language. The one for language will be the first one I do. I need to pick a passage from Plato’s Meno, translate it, explain my translation, and write something deep and philosophically provocative concerning the passage as it relates to the whole work. The translation part will be the most fun. We’ll see if I even endure long enough for the last part.
For mathematics I need to write a paper on something both philosophical and technical from Ptolemy’s Almagest. It’s difficult to read and comprehend, but his philosophy is intriguing. His comments in the introduction concerning theology, physics, and mathematics are worth some academic attention; the trick is finding where his philosophy there appears in his mathematics and hypotheses afterward. As a side note, I wrote a quick page on the word rendered “hypothesis” (ὑπόθεσις) in the Almagest, if you’re at all interested in it.
I haven’t shared much of my academic life with y’all in the past few months because it’s been taking so much time. At the beginning of the year I had more room to breathe and reflect on what I was doing long enough to write it out, but now it takes too long to breathe on some days. Ah well. College is fun. I’ll try to take some pictures of the croquet festivities to post on here.

Nap time. Toodles.
